The price on the pump sign is the number everyone watches, but it is the least useful of the three that decide what a journey costs. Distance and your vehicle's real consumption do most of the work, and consumption is not a fixed property of the car — it moves with how and where you drive. This calculator takes those three inputs, returns the fuel volume, the total cost and a cost per mile or kilometre, then prices the same trip across five vehicle classes so you can see how much of the bill is the car rather than the fuel.

The two formulas behind the result

Which formula runs depends on the unit tab, because the US and metric systems measure efficiency in opposite directions:

  • US mode uses miles per gallon: fuel needed = distance ÷ MPG. The defaults — 300 miles at 25 MPG and $3.50 a gallon — give 12.0 gallons and $42.00.
  • Metric mode uses litres per 100 km: fuel needed = distance ÷ 100 × L/100km. At 500 km, 8 L/100km and $1.50 a litre that is 40.0 litres and $60.00.
  • Cost per mile or km is the total divided by the distance, shown to the nearest cent. That rounding hides small differences, so compare totals rather than per-mile figures on short trips.

Higher MPG is better, lower L/100km is better, and the two are inverses — which is why MPG gaps mislead. On a 300-mile trip, moving from 15 to 20 MPG saves 5 gallons, while moving from 40 to 50 MPG saves only 1.5, even though the second jump looks larger. To move a figure between systems, use the fuel efficiency converter; switching tabs here resets the fields to that system's samples rather than converting what you typed.

Which efficiency figure should you enter?

This is where estimates usually go wrong. The rating on the window sticker comes from a standardised test cycle, and your own average is the more honest input. To measure it: fill the tank completely, reset the trip meter, drive normally until you are low, then fill completely again and divide the miles travelled by the gallons it took. The gas mileage calculator does that arithmetic, and averaging two or three tanks smooths out differences in where the pump clicks off.

Expect the figure to move. Consumption rises with:

  • Stop-start driving. Accelerating a stationary vehicle costs far more than holding a steady speed, so city routes consume more per mile than open road.
  • Short trips from cold. An engine below operating temperature runs richer, so several short journeys use more than one longer trip covering the same distance.
  • Higher cruising speeds. Aerodynamic drag climbs steeply with speed, making fast motorway cruising dearer per mile than a slightly slower pace.
  • Extra load and drag — roof boxes, bike racks, a full car, a trailer, or a headwind.
  • Terrain and conditions, including sustained climbs, cold weather and under-inflated tyres.

Reading the vehicle comparison table

The table re-prices your trip, at your fuel price, across five built-in profiles: in US mode a compact car at 35 MPG, a sedan at 28, an SUV at 22, a truck at 18 and a sports car at 20, with the rough metric equivalents in litres per 100 km. The Savings vs Worst column measures each row against the most expensive vehicle in the list, which at these figures is always the truck.

Two caveats. The profiles are fixed illustrative classes, not editable and not tied to any model — a real compact might beat 35 MPG or fall well short. And every row uses your single fuel price, which is fine for petrol against petrol but not for fuels that cost different amounts per unit. Read the table as a sense of scale.

What the cost figure does not include

Everything here is fuel and only fuel. A journey also carries tolls, parking, tyre and brake wear, servicing that arrives by mileage, and depreciation accumulating with every mile. For a one-off trip that hardly matters; for a daily commute it matters a great deal, and the commute cost calculator is the better tool for that question. The calculation assumes a volume-based fuel, so petrol, diesel and LPG all work with the matching price, but an electric vehicle measured in kWh does not.

How to use the Fuel Cost Calculator

  1. Choose US (miles, MPG, $/gal) or Metric (km, L/100km, $/L) first, since switching resets the fields.
  2. Enter the distance, including the return leg if you want the round-trip cost.
  3. Enter your fuel efficiency — ideally your own measured average rather than the brochure figure.
  4. Enter the fuel price per gallon or litre, matching the grade you actually buy.
  5. Read the three cards: total fuel cost, volume needed, and cost per mile or kilometre. Everything recalculates as you type.
  6. Check the comparison table for the same trip across the five vehicle classes and each row's saving against the thirstiest.
  7. Re-run with a slightly worse efficiency figure to get a realistic upper bound before budgeting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use the manufacturer's MPG or my own?

Your own, whenever you have it. Official ratings come from standardised test conditions, and your route, load and driving style routinely produce a different result. Fall back on the rating only for a rental or a car you do not own yet.

How do I work out my real fuel economy?

Fill the tank fully, reset the trip meter, drive until low, then fill fully again. Miles driven divided by gallons added is your MPG; litres added divided by kilometres driven, multiplied by 100, is your L/100km.

Does the distance need to include the return journey?

Yes, for a round-trip cost. A journey of 150 miles each way should be entered as 300.

Can I change the vehicles in the comparison table?

No, those five profiles are fixed. To price a specific vehicle, enter its efficiency in the main field and read the result cards instead.

Why don't my numbers convert when I switch units?

The tabs load that system's sample values rather than converting, because efficiency runs in inverse directions between the two systems. Convert deliberately, or re-enter your figures after switching.

Does it work for diesel or an electric car?

Diesel and LPG work fine — enter the correct price per gallon or litre with that vehicle's consumption. Electric vehicles do not, since their energy is measured in kilowatt-hours rather than volume.

Is the cost per mile my true cost of driving?

No, it is fuel cost per mile only. Depreciation, insurance, tyres, servicing, tolls and parking are excluded, and together they usually exceed the fuel component over a year.
