The total day count is the figure to trust here. It is built from the UTC calendar components of each date, which means a daylight saving change falling between the two cannot shave an hour off the arithmetic and round the answer down. Counting is exclusive: the 1st to the 5th returns four, because the tool measures the gap between the dates rather than counting both endpoints. The years, months and weeks cards are conversions of that day total using 365.25, 30.44 and 7 days, so they are ratios rather than calendar-exact counts.

Does the count include both the start and the end date?

No. It measures the gap between them, so 1 March to 5 March returns 4. Add one yourself when your context counts both endpoints, as rental agreements and attendance registers often do.

Can it count working days only?

No. There is no weekday filter and no holiday calendar, so every Saturday, Sunday and public holiday is counted. For a business-day figure you will have to subtract the weekends yourself.

Why do the years and months figures look slightly off?

They divide the day total by 365.25 and 30.44, the average lengths of a year and a month. A span of exactly 365 days therefore displays as 0 years, because 365 is less than 365.25. Treat both as a sense of scale, not a calendar count.

What do the hours and minutes cards mean?

They are the day total converted at 24 hours and 1440 minutes per day. There is no time-of-day input on this page, so they always land on exact multiples of a day rather than a real clock difference.

Does the swap button change the answer?

No, and that is the point. The difference is an absolute value, so swapping only tidies up which field reads as the start when you use the add and subtract panel below.

Which date does the add and subtract panel work from?

The Start Date field, never the End Date. Change Start Date if you want to project forward or backward from the other end of your range.

How does it handle adding a month at the end of a month?

It shifts the month number and lets the day overflow, which is standard JavaScript date behavior. Adding one month to 31 January therefore gives 3 March in a common year and 2 March in a leap year.

Are leap days counted?

Yes. The day total is a true calendar difference, so a span crossing 29 February comes out one day longer than the same span in a common year.

Do daylight saving changes affect the result?

No. The calculation runs on UTC calendar components rather than local midnight timestamps, so the hour that a spring or autumn clock change adds or removes cannot push the day count off by one.
